Indigestion and heartburn (gastro-oesophageal reflux) is an uncomfortable condition that is extremely common and can afflict most people at some time in their life. The terms are used to cover a range of symptoms of a few medical conditions. These include gastro-oesophageal reflux, ulcers, food intolerances, bloating and flatulence. Common causes of indigestion and heartburn can be when food is eaten too quickly or too much is consumed. Lifestyle factors like stress, smoking, being overweight, pregnancy, wearing tight clothing or ingesting trigger foods (chocolate, coffee, deep fried foods, orange juice and alcohol) can also bring on the condition. Essentially indigestion and heartburn happens when the contents of the stomach back up into the oesophagus, causing a burning sensation.
If you experience heartburn, indigestion or an upset stomach continuously for more than 2 weeks, whether or not you are taking the full dose, it is recommended that you seek medical advice from your Doctor to determine if an antacid is the correct solution for your symptoms.
Antacids may interact with certain prescription drugs. If you are presently taking a prescription drug, do not take any heartburn remedy without checking with your doctor or pharmacist.
As for other medicines, ask for your Doctor's advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
